Case Studies that Demonstrate Success
Below are two case studies that illustrate Blue Moon Productions’ process for developing successful technical illustration projects.
1. Abbott Diabetes Kit
2. Polycom SoundStation Security Kit
CASE STUDY NO. 1
Abbott Diabetes Kit
Problem:
Abbott needed a technical illustrator to develop a series of illustrative steps to demonstrate the procedure for using an insulin pump.
Solution:
Blue Moon Productions was contacted and hired to develop the technical illustrations.
Design & Illustration Process:
The project began with a meeting with the product Marketing Manager. He demonstrated the steps required for attaching the insulin catheter to the body. Faith took notes and reference photos of each step.
For this project, Faith was able to borrow all components and bring them back to her studio which gave her the opportunity to photograph each component from the same point of reference for consistent orientation and lighting. The line art was then created from her photo reference.
Files were returned to the client and the procedural step art was reviewed in context in a draft of the user guide. Revisions were made to the art a few weeks into the project to reflect changes that were made in the hardware design as the product was finalized.
Success:
The following series of illustrations were created for the insulin pump. Click on the illustrations below to view and enlarge them. (Portfolio Navigation)

CASE STUDY NO. 2
Polycom SoundStation Security Kit
Problem:
Teleconference phones were being stolen from conference rooms within companies that used them. A security kit was developed that secured the phone to the table so they cannot be easily removed.
Solution:
Polycom needed an inexpensive step-by-step instructional insert that could be xeroxed and shipped with SoundStation Security Kit. Blue Moon Productions was contacted and hired to develop the insert.
Design & Illustration Process:
Prior to starting the project, Faith Bradford met with hardware designer of the security kit. He demonstrated the prototype and lent her the hardware. Faith then photographed each step and used the photographs as reference for the illustrations. A sketch was created for each graphic step. Faith also wrote the corresponding instructions.
Success:
Upon content approval, a simple instruction sheet was designed and illustrated. Click on the illustrations below to enlarge them. (Portfolio Navigation)
